xChange: Is marketing nearly there yet? with Rory Sutherland

In our March 15th xChange Paul Skinner and Claire Low interviewed Rory Sutherland, advertising guru, author, columnist, speaker and behaviour change genius, to explore how marketing can help us to take better journeys in the literal sense of making our transport systems more people-friendly.

Pandemics withstanding, we spend a surprising amount of our lives and income on our travel. And whether these journeys are highways to heaven or roads to hell is not just an individual concern. Better journeys hold the key to addressing many of our most complex challenges, from adapting to the climate emergency, to improving our wellbeing to revitalising our towns and cities.

We also explored how marketing can help us to take a better journey through life in a metaphorical sense. There is a long tradition of thinking of life itself as a journey and it turns out this has a psychological foundation. We map our world in the stories we tell ourselves and changing these stories for the better can help us to reach healthier, happier and more rewarding destinations.
